Be honest in deciding whether you are a hobbyist or business owner. The two are very different. If you are feeling frustrated with your home business, it’s likely because you are doing the activities of a hobbyist and not a business owner.
I was inspired to write this today because I am hearing from lots of people who are frustrated in their lives or lack of success in their home business. I don’t like to make assumptions so I ask lots of questions to get to the bottom of the frustration.
In my little poll, the statistics are overwhelming towards all these people having strong hobbyist traits and zero business owner traits.
And remember this next time you are frustrated:
- Hobbies cost money.
- A business will earn you profits over time.
What does it all mean? Don’t worry, I will explain. By the end of this article, you will know which category you fall into. Then you can make a clear decision as to where you really want to be in your life.
Do You Have Traits of a Hobbyist or Business Owner?
Don’t misunderstand this article. I am not criticizing anyone. I simply want to point out that if you are truly a hobbyist, recognize that fact so you don’t get frustrated by not succeeding in your business. Or make a decision to get serious.
Here’s what I mean. I get so many messages from people who are desperate to make money online. I like to understand how serious they are and get to the bottom of why they want to do this.
Once they are in our marketing system or some even join my MLM business, we have very clear training and mentoring on the steps that must be done consistently.
I have had people join my primary business over the last few years who are super excited, but after giving them a single assignment, I never hear from them again.
I have seen people in our MLSP marketing system that have every excuse in the book why they couldn’t quite get to the task at hand. Too busy, don’t have time, tired, and the excuses go on.
The point is, that these very same people complain that they are not successful online or in their MLM business. Of course they are NOT successful, they have not done anything!
What the heck is happening here?
- Hobbyists do things when they feel like or just when it’s convenient. Their business is not a priority and they get to it when they get to it.
- Business owners do income generating activities on a consistent basis even when they don’t feel like it. If they don’t have time, they make time and sacrifice in the now for a positive result in their future.
Again, there is nothing wrong with being a hobbyist and tinkering around with Internet marketing or network marketing. But be honest with yourself about that so you can stop being frustrated because of the work you DID NOT put into your business.
If you are truly a business owner, congratulations. Keep up the good work!
Anyone can make the shift from hobbyist to successful business owner. It has nothing to do with skills. It has to do with a personal decision that you make and the priorities you set in your life.
Its ALL about priorities – does not mean mine are totally correct, always room for change – great post and good reminder.
Thanks Gary! It’s a nice reminder – we all need to keep our priorities in check 🙂

Hey Lisa,
Most people that I talk to always share with me that they want to make money yet most will admit they need to make a change but many will not take the proper action to make it happen. It’s unfortunate that the end of the day they need they will still have the same things happen day in and day out. Great post Lisa. I will be visiting more often. 🙂
Thanks Nate! We must be talking to the same people 🙂 I experience this too and people spend more time talking about what they want and no time taking the required action to get it.
See you soon.
